Arab Street

masjid sultan 300x225 Arab Street

Persian carpets, rugs, Middle Eastern food, Turkish delights, historical mosques and a whole lot of heritage all thrown into one big melting pot, Arab Street.

Within a maze of Kandahar Street, Muscat Street, Bussorah and Baghdad Street lays an area largely left to its own development by the government. And developed it did, this place is now a Mecca for shopping, great food, good music & even smoking multi flavored Shisha. For the uninitiated, a Shisha is a tobacco pipe with a long flexible tube connected to a container where the smoke is cooled by passing through water.

There are heaps of bars & restaurant dotting the lanes & alleyways serving Spanish, Moroccan, Lebanese, Greek, Egyptian & Turkish cuisine. Soccer games are played out live on large screens and you can enjoy a good conversation with locals & expatriates alike.

An absolute must buy; fabrics. Rows and rows of them lined up as far as your eyes can see. We particularly liked the fact that they will bring you reams stack up past your head until you see something you like. No questions asked.

Oh, you’ll be pleasantly surprise to find some of the best Blues & Jazz bars in the country around these areas. Try the Blu Jaz Café on Bali lane, it’s one of our favorite.

Getting there:

Bus Services Available – 12 130 133 2 33 960 NR7, 2N 48 4N 57, 32 51 61 63 80 145 175 197

By Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) – Bugis MRT Station on the East-West line. Exit towards Raffles Hospital exit. Head towards Golden Landmark Hotel, which is right next to Arab Street.
